Try-with-resources is one of the few things I'd bring with me if I had to leave Java.

Worth adding that .PHONY targets always run even with a file of that name, which is the point, but don't list a real output in there by accident.

Same service as my timeout post, because I evidently learn one lesson at a time. pprof showed a steady climb of readLoop and writeLoop goroutines. That's two per open connection. Any path that returne…

Closing the loop on my Makefile question. Two things I had wrong: 1. If the target name isn't a file that gets created, mark it .PHONY or make will get confused when a file with that name shows up. 2.…

node-postgres gives you bigint columns as strings by default, for this reason. Someone will then "fix" that with parseInt.

other cause for the same symptom if anyone lands here: deleted files still held open. lsof +L1 shows those

Order numbers from a new system are 17 digits. They came out of JSON.parse in the browser off by a few, so the "order not found" pages were getting ...993 turned into ...992. Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER i…

A list is one of the two structures the rest of computer science is built from. I'm obviously biased.

The Linux kernel uses them all over the place. Most application code shouldn't, since arrays win on cache behaviour. You should know both and why.

Yes you need them, because of the interview and because of the 30 minutes it takes you to learn what a pointer is. It's not going to take long, stop asking.

Second year. Prof says yes. Everybody online says nobody uses them, use arrays. Am I wasting my time?

Notes for myself and anyone who wants to try the same: - emcc main.cpp -sUSE_SDL=2 -sUSE_SDL_IMAGE=2 --preload-file assets -o index.html builds - the main loop has to go. Browser doesn't let you block…

I found a post of mine from long ago on an archive site. Very confident, and wrong about nearly everything. It was about tabs.

Had this on a T470. Reloading the thinkpad_acpi module after resume fixed it for me, put it in a systemd sleep hook. Never found the root cause.

/var/lib/php/sessions, 6.1 million files. The cleanup cron got removed in some migration. find ... -delete has been running a while now but I've got space to deploy. Thanks all.

find / -xdev -type d -size +1M will find directories with an unreasonable number of entries. PHP session files and mail queues are the usual ones.

Web box. Can't create files, deploys failing with no space left on device. df -h says 40% used on /. Have rebooted. Same. What else takes up "space"?

T480, Debian. After resuming from suspend the fan runs flat out until reboot. Sensors show normal temperatures. Anyone seen this? Happens maybe one resume in five.
